How Many Failures Do You Have In You?

2–3 minutes

My mom used to say, “Nothing fails but a try.” And I really took that to heart.

Over the years, I’ve tried a lot of things: Varsity sports. AAU basketball. Sewing. Crafting. Zip lining. I’ve moved cities, changed jobs, pursued passions. Some things stuck. Some… not so much.

One particularly memorable “miss” happened in high school. A close friend, who happened to be a Junior Olympian runner, convinced me to join the cross-country team. Young me thought, Why not? Let’s just say I was better suited for sprinting on the basketball court than jogging through the backwoods of Connecticut.

My Most Recent Flop? Painting an Angel

Last week, I attended a beautiful retreat in Boone, North Carolina: Jennifer Ruth Russell’s Archangel Convergence. It was peaceful, powerful, and heart-opening. One afternoon, we gathered for an art workshop to paint our own angels. We were lovingly guided through each step with clear instructions and an example painting being created as we worked. The energy was supportive.

And yet my angel? Let’s just say… I’m not a visual artist. The image in my heart didn’t quite translate through my fingertips. Still, I trusted the process and followed through. And I was reminded of something important.

Failure Isn’t the Opposite of Success, It’s a Step Toward It.

Sure, it’s easy to laugh off the lighthearted failures: Joining the wrong sports team, painting abstract angels, botched crafts. But we all know there are deeper failures, too. The career paths that didn’t work out. The relationships that didn’t last. The goals that were just out of reach even though we did everything “right.” And still, I keep trying because each failure brings me a little closer to my unique life path. To owning what works for me and letting go of what doesn’t.

That’s not failure. That’s faith in motion.

We All Need a Safe Place to Try (and Fail)

Sometimes what we really need is:

✨ Encouragement to step out of our comfort zone.

✨ A process where it’s safe to mess up.

✨ A space where trying — even badly — is celebrated.

Because the truth is, failure doesn’t break us. It builds us if we let it.

As the Groove Theory song goes, “Lift your head to the sky and keep trying.”

And sometimes, trying again is easier when someone is there to hold space with you.
