I went into social work because I wanted to help people. And I believe most of us in helping professions share that same calling: to care; to give; to make sure someone else’s needs are met, in ways ours might not have been.
But if I’m honest, part of what drove me wasn’t just compassion. It was also performance – the performance of trying to earn approval, love, and acceptance. Trying to be “good enough” to finally feel worthy. We’re conditioned to believe those things are rewards and earned only if we do enough, give enough, prove enough. But eventually… it stops working. In work and in life.
When Helping Starts to Hurt
There comes a point when all the helping, all the over-giving, all the performing doesn’t get us the connection we hoped for. The love isn’t returned. The applause fades. And we’re left burned out, resentful, and empty.
There’s a saying: “I can’t keep setting myself on fire to keep others warm.” It’s true. When we give from depletion, we lose ourselves. Physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. So where do we go from here?
We Go Inward
The turning point comes when we stop reaching outside for approval. And start turning inward for truth. When we remember we are worthy, RIGHT NOW. Without any extra degrees, new accolades, or further proving. You don’t have to perform to be enough. YOU ARE ENOUGH right now.
When that truth lands, really lands, you can stop burning yourself out to light others’ paths. You begin to tend your own inner fire instead. And from that fire, you can offer warmth without sacrificing yourself.
Let Someone Hold the Handlebars
Sometimes, remembering your worth takes practice. Just like riding a bike or learning to swim, we all need support when we’re learning something new.
Sometimes it’s someone steadying the handlebars while we wobble.
Sometimes it’s someone beside us in the water, reminding us we won’t drown.
If you’re in that place – tired of overgiving and ready to reclaim your worth — I’d love to support you.

You don’t need to do more to be worthy. You only need to remember who you are.
