A Simple Practice to Change the Way You See Yourself

2–3 minutes

Hey there, my Friend,

Einstein famously said: “ You can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it.” And yet, so many of us walk through life holding onto negative beliefs about ourselves. Then we wonder why positive change feels impossible. Maybe you’ve left, or lost, a job that once defined you. Maybe a relationship ended — through distance, divorce, or death. Maybe it feels like the best parts of your life are behind you… or never even existed.

I’ve been there. I’ve carried those thoughts. But I also know this: They aren’t true.

You are fearfully and wonderfully made. The same joy you feel when you watch a cute animal video? The same warmth you experience hearing a favorite song or holding a baby? Those feelings aren’t separate from you. They live inside you. And they can be directed toward yourself.

It Starts with Changing the Way You See You

Wayne Dyer once said: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” That includes how we look at ourselves. But how do we start seeing ourselves through a more loving, positive lens? Sometimes, wehave to cheer for ourselves and remember who we are.

The Practice of “Collecting Buttercups”

One small practice has helped me reconnect to the good in my life, actively building my stockpile of positives for when life gets tough. I call it “Collecting Buttercups,” inspired by Leil Lowndes’ book How to Talk to Anyone.

Buttercups are those small moments of kindness, compliments, or encouragement we often overlook:

🌼 A friend’s kind words

🌼 A coworker’s praise

🌼 A stranger’s smile

🌼 Positive feedback, no matter how small.

Most of us brush those moments aside. But they’re powerful reminders of our goodness, our worth, and our light. When you collect your Buttercups and reflect on them, you begin to shift your self-perception. Changing your perception to the positive calms your nervous system. And calming your nervous system changes your outlook. Collecting Buttercups can also remind you to see yourself the way others already do. You are capable, lovable, and worthy.

Why This Simple Shift Matters

We often think massive change requires massive effort. But real transformation? It starts with the small, practical things:

  • Training your mind to notice the positive
  • Allowing your body to rest in moments of goodness
  • Reclaiming your joy, one Buttercup at a time

Your perspective shapes your reality. And your nervous system responds to the stories you tell yourself. Use your Buttercups to rewire your mind.
