I have spent at least the last 20 years of my life in a state of almost constant stress. If I wasn’t worrying about my children, I was worried about my workplace. Or my social work clients. Or the environment. Or the pandemic. Or then, my health. Until last year, I don’t think I could have told you the last time I felt naturally relaxed.
Even in my sleep, stress had me clenching my teeth. I was on edge all the time. Even when I looked totally calm on the surface, I would stress-eat to “soothe my nerves” and overwork as an escape.
What if these symptoms weren’t just dysfunction? What if they were communication?
That question became a doorway. It changed how I approached healing. And I invite you to explore today what your stress might be telling you.
Cortisol: Protector or Messenger?
Cortisol gets a bad rap, but in truth, it’s essential. Here’s some of the good it does for us:
- Regulates our blood sugar and energy
- Helps control inflammation
- Supports our sleep-wake cycle
- Protects us in times of real danger
The trouble starts when cortisol levels in our blood stay too high for too long. While doctors don’t usually test our cortisol levels, our modern stressful lives give us plenty of signs when we are overloaded with this hormone. Chronic stress keeps our bodies in survival mode — wearing down our immunity, disturbing our sleep, and fraying the edges of our wellbeing. But what if all this high cortisol is trying to tell us something important?
Three Messages Hidden in Our Stress Response
Through hypnosis and inner work, I discovered that my body wasn’t just breaking down; it was speaking up. First in whispers, then in a shout. Here’s what I learned (and what might resonate for you too):
1. Boundaries Have a Voice
When I worked past exhaustion, skipped meals, or ignored my need for rest – even bathroom breaks — my body stopped whispering and spoke louder. Eventually that led to my life-changing hospital stay after passing out in the parking garage at my job. Stress symptoms often mirror where our boundaries are being crossed, by ourselves and others.
2. Emotions Leave a Footprint
Research shows chronic stress isn’t just about external pressure. Unprocessed emotions — like grief, anger, and fear — can become stuck in our bodies, disrupting our delicate hormonal balance. Like the book says, the body really does keep the score. When I was finally in a safe enough environment I began processing my buried emotions. And began to stabilize my cortisol levels. My healing journey wasn’t a miracle cure — it was a real biochemical shift rooted in emotional honesty and fueled by hypnosis.
3. Presence Changes Physiology
One thing about chronic stress is that it pulls out of the present moment: we’re either fretting about the past or full of anxiety about the future. But in hypnosis, I learned powerful practices that help me stay calmly rooted in the [right now]. Breathing deeply. Feeling my feet on the floor. Humming softly. Bringing forward my favorite version of myself and the life that she leads. Each moment of presence is like handing my nervous system a permission slip to rest and repair.
A Practice for You: Breathing into Calm and Humming away the Cortisol
Here’s a simple practice you can try anytime:
🌿 Find a quiet place.
🌿 Breathe in slowly — exhale a little longer than you inhale.
🌿 On each exhale, hum a gentle note and feel the vibration in your chest.
🌿 Notice any tightness or heaviness — and send your hum there.
🌿 Ask softly: “What do you need me to hear?”
No forcing. No fixing. Just listening.
Enjoy this short breathing and humming exercise to reduce your cortisol levels.
Your Body’s Language Is Sacred
What I learned through my healing journey, and what I see in every client I work with, is our bodies aren’t betraying us. They’re communicating with us and inviting us back home to ourselves.
